2009 Stanley Cup Champions

April 24th 2009

The million dollar question is, "Who's going to win the cup this year?"

Most people will probably come out and say that the Boston Bruins are the hands down favourite to win the cup this year because of their regular season record and team play as of late. They also quite easily beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in their first series. Unfortunately I don't think that this is enough to take the cup from the reining Stanley Cup Champion, the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings have a great two way game that not many teams can compete with. Look at how easily the star studded Penguins made it through the playoffs last year only to be quite easily handled by Detroit.

If San Jose wasn't already down 3-1 in their series to the last placed Anaheim Ducks, a lot of people would say that San Jose would give the Wings a run for the Western Conference title, but since the Sharks aren't living up to their potential, the threat just isn't there any more. Nobody else from the West will be able to even compete with the skill of the Red Wings. They should breeze through the rest of the playoffs until the Stanley Cup Championship series.

The Eastern Conference isn't so easy to decide who will come out on top. The Pittsburgh Penguins have been playing terrible hockey lately, even though they are up on the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in their series. The Penguins have the talent though to easily turn it around and start playing good hockey at any moment, as long as they decide to before it's too late. Hopefully Fleury can keep them in the post season until they decide to step it up a bit. Boston is a very good team and I think the only other true choice to come out of the east. With Savard, Kessel, Krejic and Ryder all playing extremely good hockey at the moment, it's hard to say Boston won't be there in the end.

So my prediction, unless the Pens step up their game to the level they should be playing at, it will be a Boston - Detroit Stanley Cup match, with the Red Wings coming out on top for the second straight year.
